Ebook About
“When McCaffrey's beloved dragons roar and their riders soar on the beasts' mighty backs . . . fans of Pern will likely be enthralled.”—Publishers WeeklyFor generations, the dragonriders had dedicated their lives to fighting Thread, the dreaded spores that periodically rained from the sky to ravage the land. On the backs of their magnificent telepathic dragons they flew to flame the deadly stuff out of the air before it could reach the planet's surface. But the greatest dream of the dragonriders was to find a way to eradicate Thread completely, so that never again would their beloved Pern be threatened with destruction. Now, for the first time, it looks as if that dream can come true. For when the people of Pern, led by Masterharper Robinton and F'lar and Lessa, Weyrleader and Weyrwoman of Bendon Weyr, excavate the ancient remains of the planet's original settlement, they uncover the colonists' voice-activated artificial intelligence system—which still functions. And the computer has incredible news for them: There is a chance—a good chance—that they can, at long last, annihilate Thread once and for all.

Book All the Weyrs of Pern Review :

The story is wonderful. I think fans of Anne McCaffrey already know that. However, the conversion from print to digital leaves something to be desired. As I was reading, due to instances of missing text, I had to pull out my 1992 mass market paperback edition to check what I was reading because I was left scratching my head and going WTF? So I'm writing this review in order to document the missing text for those who don't have a print edition to compare to the digital edition. I hope you find it useful. Missing text is shown in brackets.Editing Issues [11]:Page 26/ location 507—missing word: Jaxom liked Jancis. Not long ago, they had shared lessons at the Mastersmithcraft [Hall] and he remembered that she had worked a lot harder than he had… (Same error in print edition)Page 33/ location 630—missing space: “So why not put them backup?” The text should read: "back up". (Error NOT in print edition)Page 187/ location 3399—typo/missing letters: “Insisted, since both [Ly]tol and myself ought to attend the Conference.” The text should read: Lytol (not tol). (Error NOT in print edition)Page 349/ location 6352—typo: Larad [proffered] writing materials and a message tube. (Error “preferred” NOT in print edition, however the print edition misspells the word as “profered.”)Page 377/ location 6874—missing words: “A ship was waiting to take [him who knows where.”] (error NOT in print edition)Page 384/ location 6965—missing words: Lord [Sigomal and Master Norist were named as those who had given] the order and supplied both marks and equipment. (As shown in the print edition)Page 387/ location 7036—missing words: “…nor wished [them harm, nor wish them harm now. I pity them for their fear] of the unknown, of the unusual, for their violence and unthinking narrowness of vision and spirit.” (as shown in the print edition)Page 399/ location 7241—missing word: Shells! But I hate to fall down on [you."] (As shown in the print edition)Page 410/location 7432—missing words: [Jaxom rubbed his hand across his lips. Knowledge of the] future was a parlous asset. But it was enough that Jaxom knew this great enterprise would work. (As shown in the print edition)Page 412/location 7473—missing words: Which constituted a major [problem for him. He desperately needed a few private words with] Aivas, to see if he had come up with any ideas on how Jaxom could insinuate himself into N’ton’s flight and get the dragons to take Ruth’s coordinates for the second time leap of a mere five hundred Turns. (As shown in the print edition)Page 427/location 7766—missing words: He felt at ease here in the Aivas room as he did not at [Cove Hold, especially when Lytol and D'ram kept treating him] like an invalid. (As shown in the print edition)
This review is for the CD audiobook version only. I've been a fan of the Pern series going way back, and I've read the books a number of times. I thought it would be nice to have the CD version for long car trips. Unfortunately, the audiobook version is terrible, entirely due to the guy reading it. I have no idea who he is, but the is virtually unlistenable. He reads with a slow, dull cadence as if he were reading the book for preschoolers. Imagine Mr. Rogers reading it and it will give you some idea. Worse, he insists on doing 'voices' for the characters. Every Weyrleader has some inexplicable southern accent, while all the female characters have a bizarre falsetto. The worst is Robinton, who speaks so slooowly and with such drawn out spacing for the words that even Alan Rickman would tell him to get on with it. Seriously, he sounds like Goliath from the old Davey and Goliath claymation series. "Well... Iii doon't knooow daaveeey".. I had intended to get the audio version of the rest of the series, over time. But too many are read by this same guy, and while a 3 year old might enjoy it, anyone older than that is going to want to shred this CD after the first half hour of listening to this guy fight his was through the simplest sentences. Imagine the worst actor you have ever seen chewing the scenery like Jaws while simultaneously dozing off.I have to say too that it's gotten harder to suspend disbelief when it comes to the story itself. Having set up the world of Pern over so many previous books, once Aivas gets involved, the story jumps along in ways that don't make much sense, and the character of Aivas makes even less. A computer that formulates a plan but won't tell anyone what it is? A computer that at times is just a machine and at others seems to have some kind of emotional awareness? That spouts bible passages to a society with no organized religion and calls the bible the greatest book ever written? The entire CD is just painful.
